The Importance of Homeopathic potency

In homeopathy, a potency refers to the degree of dilution and succession (vigorous shaking) that a remedy has undergone during its preparation.

Common Potency Scales

X or D Potencies (Decimal Scale)

  • Diluted 1:10 at each step.

  • Examples:

    • 6X = diluted and succussed 6 times.

    • 30X = diluted and succussed 30 times.

  • Often used for physical complaints and tissue salts.

C Potencies (Centesimal Scale)

  • Diluted 1:100 at each step.

  • Examples:

    • 6C

    • 30C

    • 200C

    • 1M (1,000C)

    • 10M (10,000C)

    • 50M (50,000C)

    • CM (100,000C)

LM or Q Potencies

  • Prepared using a different method involving a 1:50,000 dilution ratio.

  • Usually taken more frequently and adjusted gradually.

  • Often used in chronic cases where gentle but continuous action is desire.

From my years of conducting homeopathic provings in a slightly different way, I began to recognise the differences between potencies. Traditionally, homeopathic provings are conducted using a 30C potency, but with the meteorite remedies we often chose the potency we felt drawn to. This clearly demonstrated that lower potencies tended to have a more physical effect, while higher potencies brought forward more of the spiritual and emotional aspects of the remedy.

I would go further and say, from my clinical experience, that higher potencies reach deeper into the psyche but with never start high. Always work with the layer your client is at and move up in potency as required. That is not to say that a lower potency cannot have a profound effect, depending on the remedy itself. Sometimes it comes down to the remedy, where a particular potency has a greater tendency to aggravate than other potencies.

It always comes down to the client infront of you.

Homeopaths who use lower potencies for drainage and organ support. For example, Nux vomica in a 30C potency can be used to support liver detoxification without requiring the full remedy picture to match, and it generally does not cause proving symptoms. Silica in a 6C potency can be used to help draw out splinters.

Arnica provides another example. It is frequently prescribed in a 6C or 30C potency for bruising and injuries without requiring a complete correspondence to the full remedy picture. In contrast, remedies such as Sepia or Agni Manitite generally require a much closer match to the complete symptom picture before being prescribed.

Jill Turland's work on mega potencies showed us a whole new perspective on polycrest remedies. While they retained a similar essence, subtle differences could be observed in the way the remedy picture presented itself.

Folliculium can be used in lower potency as with all sacrodes 4 c to stimulate , 7 c to regulate and 9c to suppress but in a 30c and above it has a symptom pictures that is matched to the client. It one of the only sacrodes remedies that has this.

I also want to make note of sensentive client sometime low potency is used as the client is hypersensitive to homeopathic remedies.

As you can see potency is just as important as remedy itself.

My Hypothesis

Homochords is a homeopathic preparation that contains several potencies of the same remedy combined into one product.

The concept was developed by the German homeopathic company Heel. The idea is that different potencies may act at different levels, and combining them allows the remedy to work across a broader range of symptoms and stages of illness. I have never used these for more then just drainage remedies and they can work well but have never seen them work on a higher level of psyche. The heel products use them in D potency.

Being used more frequently in The Fibonacci sequence 3c-233c is a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers. This concept is newer. Not to much is yet known on how these work. But I am curious and open to explore.

My hypothesis is that combination potencies become their own distinct potency, rather than each potency remaining separate. I conducted an experiment using silica and the freezing method in a Petri dish. The results suggested that when the substances were mixed together, no clear pattern emerged. I need to replicate this study several more times and incorporate a Fibonacci sequence–style homaccord approach, to confirm my result. Because that would prove my hypothesis wrong and mean that it confused. Will post more about this once I do a series of tests.

I have not found any studies looking at combined potency and what happens, but am interested in discovering more through doing some studies to understand this new concept better. If someone reading this is keen and knows how would love to chat more .
